JPG is the common lossy type, but its image quality can be adversely affected by JPG artifacts, which the JPG Quality factor can choose to be very mild or drastic, but never again to be exactly the same original data. To be more effective (creating the smallest data size), lossy compression takes liberties, without greatest concern about not changing the data, in order to become drastically smaller. JPG files use lossy compression, which lets it be extremely efficient about reducing file size.
